At 1:00 AM, a knock at the door brought a young teenage boy in need of an emergency foster care placement. He was welcomed into a safe, Christ-centered home, where the barriers around his heart slowly began to fall. In time, that welcome opened the door for him to attend a church summer camp, where he made a commitment to follow Jesus – a decision that changed his life forever.
As I recently listened to this story of incredible redeeming love, the woman sharing it could hardly contain her joy. She went on to explain that, as she connected more deeply with the young man’s mother, she learned their lives had not been easy. This young man had been caught in circumstances far beyond any mother’s control.
The young man’s mother then shared her own story of a previous unplanned pregnancy. She had found comfort and care at a place that welcomed her, gave her an ultrasound, and encouraged her to not rush into a decision she might later regret. She described the moment she saw her son’s heartbeat flickering on the ultrasound monitor, sharing it was at that moment that she knew she could not terminate her pregnancy. Even after all their years of heartache and struggle, her love for her son was still abundantly evident.
The woman who opened her door at 1 AM to receive this young man was the very same woman who, many years earlier, had been serving at our Choices Medical clinic when his distraught mother walked through our doors with an unplanned pregnancy.
In that moment, an instant spark was reignited as the two women realized their lives had intersected once before – and now, years later, God had brought their stories together again.
Through it all, God has a perfect plan for each of us, and He isn’t finished yet.
