In our Choices Medical exam rooms, some of the most intimate conversations between an individual and their healthcare provider take place. Stories never shared before are recounted as people process their past pains and self-accusatory shame is confessed.
Recently, one of our team members shared that in a moment of vulnerability by a patient, she was able to listen, learn, and lean-in to a conversation that expanded past just the physical needs of her client. This provided her with the opportunity to offer holistic healthcare, compassion and connection, coupled with true hope for restorative peace.
While the primary need of providing medical testing and treatment was addressed, our team was also able to offer professional counseling referrals and connections with trusted law enforcement officers for ongoing safety concerns. But more importantly, we were able to provide reassurance that abuse is never deserved nor warranted, and the comfort of being heard and believed in a moment of deep pain.
Nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
Often, it is the care provided, the dignity displayed, and the hope of a shame-free future that lifts the heart and allows the burdens of our clients to feel lighter.
